Every so often I like to turn the spotlight on the amazing ladies who make These Girls Can Run the fantastic community it is. This week is the turn of Sarah from our Wallsend group. Sarah has been on an incredible journey to running and she is a true inspiration. Here Sarah tells her story in her own words:
Tell us a little bit about yourself
I am 43 years old, married with two children. I work part-time at a library. Last year I suffered from anxiety after a family event and decided to give running a try. I went along to the first Wallsend TGCR session on September 7th 2015 after a friend had told me about the new group.
Did you do any exercise or running before you joined the group?
Before I joined the group I had been a member of a gym but was only attending on average once a week. I also used to do a 20-minute jog around the local park on a Monday morning.
What were your main fears about joining the group?
Probably that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone.
Tell us about your first session with These Girls Can Run
I came to Jaime’s first session with a friend for support and was pleasantly surprised that most of the women were like me. It was good fun running with a group rather than on my own.
What has been your proudest moment so far on your running journey?
Getting my 5km time to under 30 mins and feeling fit and confident enough to enter 10km+ races this year. Mainly I just feel proud of how running has helped me feel healthy both mentally and physically. My family have all noticed the change for the better.
What would you say to anyone who is thinking about joining us who may not have run before?
Do it! Take the plunge. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain; not just getting fit and achieving goals but making new friends.
What do you like most about our groups?
I love being part of a group. I enjoy the feeling of camaraderie with the other women, the social aspect. I love the freedom of running at night feeling safe in a group. I love the support that we have for each other in terms of running and life in general.
Use three words to describe how running makes you feel
Free, focused, fulfilled.
So Sarah, what next?
My goal that I set with our group leader Jaime was to complete a half marathon this year. Last week I discovered I’ve got a place on The Great North Run this September! I’m looking forward to planning a training schedule with Jaime and continuing to attend 2-3 TGCR sessions a week.
