I am 44 years old, happily married with 4 grown up children and 7 beautiful grandchildren. I live in rural Northumberland, Longframlington to be exact. I manage and look after Fram Park log cabins/lodges, in Longframlington.
Did you do any exercise or running before you joined the group?
I had gone to the gym previously, however I was bored, the instructor was more interested in his phone than teaching the class. Plus I didn’t feel any benefit from going. I cycle a lot and also swim which I love to do.
What were your main fears about joining the group?
Being the fattest and slowest and holding the group back
Tell us about your first session with These Girls Can Run
I drove to the leisure centre car park on a very wet Tuesday evening, the date was August 25th 2015, all dressed and ready to go. I then drove straight back out after seeing the ladies…..I guess I panicked. I gave myself a good telling off at home, I was livid with myself. I think I felt a little intimidated maybe and overwhelmed and scared plus the rain and cold didn’t help! I then drove there on the Thursday evening and actually parked up this time, adrenaline kicking in and fear. I was about to drive off when Julie saw me and approached and introduced herself, at this point I had no choice but to get out of my car and go meet the other ladies, which I’m so pleased I did, I have never looked back.
What has been your proudest moment so far on your running journey?
I recently completed Bamburgh 10km and I did it in under an hour....57:58. I never thought this would be possible.
What would you say to anyone who is thinking about joining us who may not have run before?
Do it, the ladies are lovely and friendly and encouraging and so supportive. No one is ever left at the back like I thought, we all loop back. I feel like I have made so many new and lifelong friends. I have gone from being the back runner to front runner in less than 7 months. At first I couldn’t even run from lamp post to lamp post without stopping and gasping for air. Now I run, talk and laugh as I go and I GENUINELY LOVE IT!! I LOVE TO RUN! It's a great group, great ladies, great company and great routes, what a journey so far. Take that first step, you won’t regret it, I know I haven’t.
What do you like most about our groups?
The ladies are so supportive and caring and we stay in touch outside of running and meet up its wonderful, my extended family.
Use three words to describe how running makes you feel
Fit, Invigorated, Energetic.
So Karen, what next?
I have now lost 5 stone and have 2 more stone to lose, so watch this space. I have also entered the Great North Run in September 2016 and the London Marathon in 2017, fingers crossed I get through the ballot!
