I know when I'm going back there, I hear the negative voices start. "Why are you bothering?" "Who are you trying to kid?" "You might as well give up now". Crazy thoughts from someone who has two marathons, numerous half marathons and much more under her belt but it happens and it happens regularly.
What I came to realise over time was that if I listened to those voices then inevitably they were proved right. I'd go home miserable, defeated and feeling like a massive failure. So, I tried changing what those voices said. "Why are you bothering?" became "Every minute I keep going is a bonus"."Who are you trying to kid?" became "Watch me, I'm amazing, my body is amazing, look what I can do!" and so on. Sure enough, with these positive mantras going round and round in my head while I ran I felt stronger and stronger with every step I took.
