The campaign is very close to my heart as it encompasses my own journey to health and fitness and everything our groups stand for. Although an honour, with it comes a big responsibility, a responsibility to encourage women and girls locally to become active and to stay active.
I'm so aware of many of the barriers which exist to women exercising, having experienced most of them myself. I understand the fear of judgement, the lack of confidence, and all those other emotions which women may go through when making the decision to become active.
So, what better event to be involved in than a This Girl Can Santa Fun Run? The Fun Run was organised by Active Newcastle in partnership with lots of local running groups and organisations, including ourselves.
I am utterly convinced that Saturday 5th December was the windiest day EVER , it was truly blowing a gale. Despite that, and not put off by the awful conditions, 200 brave ladies turned up with huge smiles on their faces, proudly sporting their This Girl Can tattoos and their Santa hats and Elf costumes.
I watched every single one of them cross the line still smiling, some holding hands, most in groups and I even saw some of them re-run parts of the course in order to support other ladies. Right there and then I watched the This Girl Can campaign in action and it was utterly incredible.
Best of all I had my 2 daughters with me that day. Although aged only 4 and 6, I want them to understand the importance of being fit and and healthy and also that as females nothing should stand in the way of them doing this. All of the ladies who took part in this amazing event showed them and the world exactly that!
Well done ladies you are all AWESOME!
