"My name is Nicola and I am so excited to be leading the Great Park tribe. Although I have been physically active throughout my adult life, I have tried and failed to become a runner. I did, in fact, complete the Great North Run when I was a teenager, back in 1986, but never pursued this any further.
I started my journey back to running a few years ago after being coerced by one ofnmy closest friends, who is a strong runner. I tried a few times to get out and improve my skills but found running on my own incredibly hard, so I just kept giving up. I considered myself to be totally ‘useless’ or words to that effect and always compared myself to my friend.
Last year though, something changed. I kept seeing posts on Facebook from another friend and old neighbour, who is a regular runner with the Great Park tribe.I’d often drive or walk past her and the group on my way to the Co-op at Gosforth Park. I’d be on the chocolate run and they’d be out on one of their evening runs. After feeling envious of her progress, I decided I wanted to give this running thinganother go. After a few messages with her I plucked up the courage to contact Kim and the rest, as they say, is history. Gill, I owe you one!
I now run regularly on a Monday night and try, if I can, to make it on a Wednesday too. My work life can be quite hectic and sporadic but if I am home in time I try to be there. The support from the group is fantastic. I never run alone, there’s always someone to talk to and the best thing of all, I’ve made so many friends. I’ve beenwith the group since October 2017 and have met so many wonderful ladies, whohave messaged me when I’ve not been able to make it or greeted me with a hug if they’ve not see me in a while.
I now call myself a runner! I don’t consider myself ‘useless’ anymore and haverecently started getting out on my own and enjoying it. I’d love to share my new-found passion with others who may feel how I have in the past. If someone had told me this time last year I would have doing this I wouldn’t have believed them. I’m so glad I found ‘These Girls Can Run’!"
